Talented but Underpaid? Why Good Work Isn’t Enough [TBS 66]

What do you say when a client likes your work, then asks you to lower the price? That conversation can be harder than the creative work itself. Especially when you want the project, need the income or worry that pushing back will cost you the relationship. At this Artbox panel, Adrian Tan speaks with Kyle Ong, James Tan and Johnson Gunasekaran about how they handle those moments across filmmaking, photography and marketing. James explains why having prices ready for additional requests helps you respond before the work starts piling up. Kyle discusses negotiating a trade-off when a client wants a discount. Johnson shares why a rate quoted two years ago does not have to remain your rate forever. For freelancers and small agency owners, these are decisions that shape how much time a project actually takes— and whether the fee still makes sense. Which is harder for you: quoting your price or holding it when someone pushes back? Can you really make a living doing what you love in Singapore? For Rowena See, theatre is her passion, but teaching accounts for around 70% of her income. The remaining 30% comes from theatre work. And here's the surprising part: landing more than two theatre projects in a year can already feel like an amazing year for her. Meanwhile, Fiona Chua balances modelling, acting and other creative jobs, planning her finances around an unpredictable stream of opportunities. So what does financial stability actually look like when your dream career doesn't come with a fixed salary? In this episode of Wise & Shine, Adrian Tan and Faith Choo sit down with Rowena and Fiona to uncover the realities of building a creative career in Singapore. From taking on multiple jobs and managing irregular income to developing new skills and creating their own opportunities, they share what it really takes to keep pursuing the arts. Because passion may be what gets you started, but financial planning is part of what keeps you going. Would you give up a stable salary to pursue something you love? Everyone talks about India’s growth. But how much are you paying for that growth? That is where the conversation gets more interesting. India can have strong fundamentals, rising consumption and companies with long growth runways, while its stock market can still look expensive at certain points. Both things can be true. In this episode of Chills with TFC, Jermyn Wong of UTI Investment Singapore breaks down how investors can think about Nifty 50 valuations, what a “fair” P/E might look like and how India compares with markets such as the US. Because choosing a market is not only about asking which economy will grow fastest. Price still matters. Would you pay a premium for India’s growth story, or wait for a better valuation? Quitting a stable job is one thing. Having enough money to survive if it fails is another. Before Chanel Yui left teaching, she had saved enough to give herself a few years of runway. That gave her room to try different paths: cosplay, modelling, content creation, events, art and retail — without betting everything on one idea. Three years later, she is still taking risks, just calculated ones. For anyone thinking about leaving a stable career, her story is a reminder that the leap does not start with the resignation letter. It starts with being ready for what comes after. Kevin thought he had found someone he could trust. They met through a property-investing community. The other man spoke about family, long-term relationships and business. The first payments arrived without Kevin even needing to chase. Over time, that trust grew into multiple deals… and eventually into borrowed money. Then the rhythm changed. Payments needed reminders. A few days became longer delays. Excuses piled up. Kevin says the stress started showing at work and even clients could tell something was weighing on him. By then, this was no longer only an investment problem. His turning point was deciding to stop waiting quietly. Kevin documented what had happened, spoke publicly and engaged debt collectors. He recovered S$100,000, but the episode is less about getting money back than understanding how trust can blur risk. Today, he is sharing the mistakes publicly through Quest with Kev so other people can examine opportunities with less emotion than he did. Is your SME actually using AI… Or are you just adding more AI tools? The real opportunity may be much less flashy. Think WhatsApp enquiries, emails, quotations, appointments, repetitive admin and all the small workflows your team keeps doing manually. In TFC Business Show 65, Leonard Loo, Co-Founder & CEO of Voltade, breaks down how SMEs can move beyond simply chatting with AI and start getting it to actually do work inside the business. Because adopting AI does not mean automating everything overnight. The more useful question is: which repetitive processes are slowing your team down, and which ones can already be handed over? For business owners, this could mean less time spent coordinating routine work — and more time focused on customers, growth and decisions that still need a human. If AI could take one repetitive workflow off your team tomorrow, what would you hand over first? AI can make work faster. But should it do all the thinking for us? In this Wise & Shine conversation, Chelvin Loh, Dr Tommie Chen and Mario Jacober explore how AI is changing jobs, skills and the way people work. The bigger question is not simply whether AI will replace jobs, but which tasks should be automated, where human judgement still matters and what skills will keep professionals relevant. For working professionals, staying ahead may mean less chasing every new AI tool and more strengthening judgement, communication, adaptability and real-world capability. Jeremy Ko’s first gym died after about a year. No triumphant founder montage. He was fresh out of NS, knew fitness, but did not yet know how to run the business. That failure gave him the thing he could not buy from a franchise deck: context. More than a decade later, he says his group has 25+ gyms, alongside fitness equipment, sports supply and climbing businesses. The part worth stealing is not “work harder”. Jeremy’s model got stricter. He starts with demand and catchment, works backwards into rent and costs, and asks whether the concept can scale without the founder becoming the permanent receptionist, troubleshooter and cleaner. His sharpest line for anyone romanticising entrepreneurship: if you only create one outlet that needs you every day, you may have bought yourself a job. For TFC’s working-professional crowd, that is the real tension. Leaving a salary can create freedom… or swap one boss for rent, payroll and leaking roofs. --- 🎧 The Financial Coconut: Your weekly source for empowering financial knowledge and unlocking possibilities. Most people try to make their jobs sound more impressive. Shaik Nifael does the opposite: "I clean longkangs for a living." He left school without the conventional qualifications his parents had hoped for and ended up doing the work he had been warned about growing up. At first, even Shaik was embarrassed by it. Then something shifted: engineers were listening to his advice, clients relied on him when buildings had problems, and he realised the job people looked down on was highly technical and hard to replace. That experience became the foundation for Jetters Incz. Along the way, Shaik took a S$1,900 management trainee salary, learnt sales the hard way, and later secured S$200,000 in backing from businessman Kelvin Neo. Jetters has since grown into a waste-management business reported to be generating around S$3 million in annual revenue. This isn’t a "school doesn’t matter" story. It’s about what happens when you stop judging a career by how impressive it sounds and start asking where the real demand, skill and opportunity are. Would you buy an ETF just because it is cheaper, more tax-efficient and easier to access from Singapore? With new UCITS ETFs coming to SGX, that choice is about to become much more relevant for local investors. But convenience is only one part of the equation. In this episode of Chills with TFC, Reggie, Dawn, Chuin Ting Weber and Kang Wei Chin unpack what investors should actually look at before choosing an ETF: the index underneath it, withholding tax, brokerage costs, bid-ask spreads, liquidity and whether “passive” really means passive. They also get into a surprisingly important question: when an ETF says “World”, how much of the world are investors actually getting? The ETF wrapper may look simple. What sits inside it can be very different. So if two ETFs track similar markets, what matters most to you: lower fees, tax efficiency, easier access or broader diversification? A customer watched her live stream for SIX months before buying anything. The reason? "You're not someone that fly by night." Dawn sits down with two homegrown Singapore care brand founders - to break down how small local players actually win in a market dominated by Korean giants and Western imports. It's not bigger ad budgets. It's not paid magazine awards (those are scams - they tell you why). It's the founder showing up, every day, on TikTok Shop, on Telegram, at Artbox booths, until the trust compounds into customers who buy 38 times instead of once. If you're building a brand in a saturated category, skincare, F&B, fashion, anything, the playbook is in here. #TFCBusinessShow #SingaporeBusiness #FounderLed #Ecommerce #SmallBusinessSG #Skincare --- 🎧 The Financial Coconut: Your weekly source for empowering financial knowledge and unlocking possibilities. At 24, Nicholas thought he was choosing between photography and film production. Then he spent 36 hours in a concrete cell. Lights on around the clock. Air-con blasting. Almost nothing except time to think. And one question kept coming back: “Is this all my life is worth?” The arrest didn’t instantly give him a new career. But it forced him to question the path he had spent years building. Then came another reality check: his four-year university degree cost about S$32,000, while just two days in hospital came to S$43,000. Seeing how his father’s financial planning helped him through that moment changed how he understood the work. Nicholas eventually went from a decade in fine arts to financial consulting — carrying lessons from sport, art, relationships and one of the most difficult periods of his life into a completely different career. Topics covered: What happens when the career you studied for stops making sense The arrest that left Nicholas in a cell for 36 hours Why a pain-relief cream led to interrogation, a raid and arrest Facing the possibility of major hip surgery at 24 The S$32K degree vs S$43K hospital bill that changed his perspective Moving from fine arts and photography into finance Starting a new career with almost no relevant technical background Why freedom at work still requires discipline How around 50 character references changed his view of relationships Why trust became central to the way he works How creative skills can still matter after a major career pivot Why your career does not have to become your identity Nicholas's advice to younger people: trust the process and bet on yourself Practical, candid conversations on work, money, and everything in between. Most of us plan for the hospital bill. But what happens if you cannot work for months… or even a year? Daniel was chasing FIRE. Then cancer forced him to stop working… but not in the way he had planned. At 34, Daniel found a lump after a 5km run. Nine days later, he was diagnosed with stage 2B Hodgkin lymphoma. Six months of chemotherapy followed: 12 sessions, 13kg lost and a treatment bill of over $300,000. His hospitalisation plan covered the treatment. His employer continued paying him for six months, while an early Critical Illness payout provided additional support. The bigger lesson? Preparing for illness is not only about paying the hospital. It is also about buying yourself enough time to recover. Prudential Singapore’s Health Gap Years poll found that 67% of respondents expected severe-stage critical illness recovery to take more than a year. Yet only 29% believed they had enough savings to get through it. Daniel and medical oncologist Dr Hsieh Wen-Son join us to discuss the money, treatment and the difficult reality of life after a cancer diagnosis. If you had to stop working tomorrow, how long could your finances last? Brought to you in partnership with Prudential Singapore. For years, the credit card debate had two camps: Team Miles or Team Cashback. Now, Trust Bank is adding a third contender, which is Stockback. This week on Chills with TFC, Reggie sits down with Dawn from SG Budget Babe, personal finance YouTuber Demi Zhuang and Johnathan Chua from The Daily Ketchup Podcast to compare how they reward their spending. Dawn reveals why becoming a mum pushed her from cashback to miles. Demi shares the surprisingly elaborate card strategy she uses while furnishing her new home. Johnathan knows firsthand how even a small oversight, like a forgotten S$17 Uber charge, can affect a credit score. Now he's gotten way past that and on track to shaping his financial health and freedom. Three companies, three very different IP playbooks. A top-10 global dairy brand patents individual probiotic strains and prints the story on packaging to justify a premium. A food-traceability startup patents its core process but keeps its actual signature method a trade secret, refreshed yearly to catch counterfeits. A local kopi-brewing startup can't patent its process at all, so recipe, hardware tweaks and a registered trademark do the heavy lifting instead. Despite the size gap, the panel lands on the same warning: IP gets treated as a box to tick, filed and forgotten, instead of an asset that needs an active go-to-market plan. Getting granted is the easy part. Figuring out whether that patent should drive pricing, unlock licensing revenue, or protect a supply chain is the part founders skip. For anyone weighing whether to patent, trademark, or just keep quiet about how something is made, the panel's breakdown of costs, timelines and trade-offs is a useful gut check. Guests: Dr Eugene Ho, Director of Research and Intellectual Property, Inner Mongolia Mengniu Dairy Loh Jian Yuan, Chief Operating Officer, Kopi Near Me Pte Ltd Alrik Tan, Co-Chief Executive Officer and Chief Scientific Officer, Natural Trace Private Limited What's currently sitting in a business unprotected: is it because it's not worth protecting, or because no one's gotten around to it? --- 🎧 The Financial Coconut: Your weekly source for empowering financial knowledge and unlocking possibilities. A 100% keyword match on a resume used to be the goal. Now it's often the reason it gets rejected before a human ever reads it. Career coach Samantha Ng joins co-hosts Adrian and Faith to break down why fresh grads are sending out hundreds of applications and hearing nothing back. The diagnosis isn't a weak resume, it's a hiring system that screens through AI before anyone sees the document, filters out "too perfect" applications as machine-generated, and fills most roles through internal referrals long before they ever reach a public job portal. Samantha, who works across local, regional, and global talent as a university career coach, walks through what's actually working right now: building a visible portfolio, going beyond internships for real-world proof of skill, using cold LinkedIn outreach the right way (ask for advice, not a job), and why energy management matters as much as strategy when the rejections start piling up. Topics covered: Why AI hiring screens resumes before a human does, and what a "too perfect" match now signals The hidden hiring funnel: referrals → fairs → headhunters → portals (and why job seekers are looking in the wrong place) Portfolio vs. internship stacking: what actually proves capability Ghost job postings and lazy, AI-generated JDs Cold networking that works, and why "ask for advice" beats "ask for a job" Energy management and separating justified stress from self-inflicted comparison What to change in the next 7 days if applications aren't converting Practical, candid conversations on work, money, and everything in between. His first salary in Jakarta was S$150 a month. He saved 40% of it. Eleven years on in Singapore, he sits seven or eight years out from a S$2.5 million FIRE number, with two kids and a helper. Meet Deka, the Indonesian professional who built 630,000 subscribers in eighteen months teaching the thing his banker friends in Jakarta had never heard of: index investing. No gurus, no hot tips, no McLaren on the feed. Just a fixed split of every payday, half of every bonus into IBKR the day it lands, and a household that runs on one salary. Deka breaks down how he outsaves his childless Singaporean friends, why he moved his largest position out of CSPX and into VWRA, and what S$2.5 million looks like once you take CPF out of it. If you assumed FIRE in Singapore belongs to couples without kids, this is the counter-example. --- 🎧 The Financial Coconut: Your weekly source for empowering financial knowledge and unlocking possibilities. Singapore's National Day Rally 2026 changed how family support works. In the past, families got a bigger payout for each additional child, more money for the second child, even more for the third. That system is gone. Every child now receives the same flat support each year, no matter their birth order. Our guests explained why this matters more than the dollar amount itself: incentive-based payouts push people toward having more kids, while flat, universal support signals something different, that the government backs parenting itself, not a specific birth count. The change does not fix everything. Singles are still left out of the conversation, and policy moves faster than culture does. Removing the incentive for "just one more child" may make the support feel more honest, but it also resets what people expect family policy to do. Does support built on consistency actually change how Singaporeans plan families, or does the amount still matter most? --- 🎧 The Financial Coconut: Your weekly source for empowering financial knowledge and unlocking possibilities. Every Singapore business that outgrows Singapore looks north. Most stop at Johor. It's close, it's familiar, and anything further feels like a different order of decision. Sabah is three hours away and does not make the shortlist. Closing that gap is now Kevin George Ukang's job. Five months into running Invest Sabah, after sixteen years inside a regional development authority, his pitch to Singapore SMEs is narrower than you'd expect: tourism, logistics and food processing, with cold chain the loudest gap of the three. Hotels in Kundasang sell out while travellers are still looking for beds. Cold storage runs short in a state built on perishables. Foreign investors can hold full equity, though native title land stays off the table. None of that makes Sabah easy. It makes it early. If you've been weighing where to grow next, has Sabah ever made your list, and what would put it there? Everyone says Singapore stocks are going cheap. So one guest pulled the Bloomberg numbers before walking into the studio: small caps here trade at 13 times earnings on average. Hong Kong? About four. Malaysia, 11. Her verdict: not undervalued. "Fairly priced." Meet Lawrence Loh, the NUS professor who has scored SGX-listed companies on governance for over a decade, and Hwee Li Ong, the SAC Capital CEO who takes companies to market. No sell-side spin, no vague optimism, no box-ticking. Just data, hard questions, and the odd coconut analogy. In this Chills with TFC, they break down why large companies outscore small ones on governance every year without fail, why REITs top the governance scores year after year, and whether family-run firms deserve a place in your portfolio. So which is it for you: are Singapore small caps cheap, or just bad at explaining themselves? --- 🎧 The Financial Coconut: Your weekly source for empowering financial knowledge and unlocking possibilities. Most investors love talking about equities. But in a world of higher interest rates, geopolitical uncertainty, tariff risks, AI disruption, and shaky market narratives, fixed income may be more interesting than many people realise. Natalie Tan, Head of Wholesale for Southeast Asia, and Nathaniel Wilson, Fixed Income Investment Specialist at Aberdeen Investments, break down how bonds, credit strategies, investment grade, high yield, emerging market debt, frontier bonds, and short-duration fixed income actually fit into a portfolio. Not as “boring stuff for retirees”, but as tools that can help investors manage volatility, generate income, and think more clearly about risk. The big shift? Yields have reset higher. That means fixed income may no longer be just the defensive sidekick in your portfolio. Depending on your objective, it could play a bigger role than expected. For Singapore professionals who usually think “CPF is my bond” or go all-in on equities, this may be worth rethinking. Are bonds finally interesting again? Burnout stories are common. What is rare is someone who actually steps off the “helicopter track” and rebuilds life from scratch. Dr Faith Nadine Choo, The Side Quest Doctor, did exactly that. After clocking 70 to 80 hours weekly and surviving 30‑hour hospital calls, she realised she was running on empty. Her turning point came during a palliative posting, watching a patient her age face terminal illness. That moment forced her to confront what she was truly chasing. Dr Faith eventually broke her medical bond, paid a six‑figure penalty, and redesigned her life around freedom, health and meaningful work. Today she works 20 to 25 hours weekly, earns 8 to 10K, writes, podcasts and builds a life that fits her values. This conversation is for anyone questioning the grind, exploring FIRE or wondering what “success” should look like in Singapore’s high‑pressure system. Save this if you’re navigating burnout, career pivots or planning your own version of financial independence. A millionaire tennis coach sounds like a flex… until you hear the grind behind it. Meet Jun Chong, a tennis coach who started the sport "too late" at 13, who runs Jun Tennis Academy in Singapore, and who today is a self-made millionaire investor behind SGWealthJourney. Explore his story on the early gains that made him cocky, the all-in earnings gambles that almost wiped him out, and the painful pivot to a calmer, emotion-aware investing approach. This conversation is a reminder that wealth is not built from one perfect strategy. It comes from work, skin in the game, painful feedback, and learning how to stay sane while taking risk. Whether you're new to investing or already deep in the game, Jun's story is the kind of grounded "I made the mistakes so you don't have to" episode you'll thank yourself for watching. Manhattan Fish Market is setting its sights on a comeback by returning to what made the brand memorable in the first place: familiar flavours, accessible seafood and a distinctly Malaysian identity. At Franchise International Malaysia 2026, CEO Deric Yeo and COO Sheikh Imran Iskandar shared how the home-grown halal seafood chain is rediscovering its original DNA while adapting to changing consumer habits. That means bringing back much-loved recipes, introducing Malaysian-inspired flavours and expanding through smaller kiosk and shop-in-shop formats designed for delivery, convenience and lower franchise entry costs. The brand, which once operated across 16 countries, still maintains a presence in markets including Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, the Maldives, Myanmar and Jordan. Its strategy is clear: strengthen the Malaysian market first, prove the model, then grow into surrounding regions. For aspiring franchisees, the lesson is equally important. International expansion is not about entering every market at once. Build one successful foothold, understand local demand and let strong performance create opportunities in neighbouring countries. Manhattan Fish Market’s next chapter is about nostalgia, reinvention and disciplined growth, without losing what customers already love. #TheFinancialCoconut #ManhattanFishMarket #Franchising 🎧 *The Financial Coconut:* Your weekly source for empowering financial knowledge and unlocking possibilities. From one gym in 2017 to 16 clubs today, Jaya’s Anytime Fitness journey shows what disciplined reinvestment can achieve. Instead of taking profits out, he channelled earnings from each successful outlet into the next. That steady approach helped him scale across the Klang Valley while continuing to run other businesses. Meanwhile, Anytime Fitness Malaysia has grown from just 17 gyms in 2017 to around 130 in 2026, with even faster expansion planned. Why Malaysia? Lower rental, construction and operating costs make the market attractive, while demand for accessible fitness, personal training and community-focused gyms continues to rise. However, the opportunity comes with serious commitments: opening a club may require roughly RM1.6 million to RM1.8 million, monthly operating costs can reach RM80,000 to RM90,000, and returns may take two to three years. The lesson is simple: franchising is not passive from day one. Success still requires industry knowledge, careful site selection, strong people management and the discipline to follow a proven system, especially during the demanding early stages of the business. #TheFinancialCoconut #AnytimeFitness #FitnessFranchise 🎧 *The Financial Coconut:* Your weekly source for empowering financial knowledge and unlocking possibilities. Franchising can be one of the fastest ways to grow a business, but it can also become one of the costliest mistakes if you overlook the legal requirements. In this episode of The Financial Coconut Business Show, franchise lawyer and registered franchise consultant Damien Yeo unpacks the legal framework behind Malaysia's Franchise Act 1998 and explains why many businesses unknowingly cross the line from licensing into franchising. Simply calling your business a "licence" does not mean the law will see it that way. Damien breaks down the four legal elements that define a franchise, why registration matters, and the serious consequences businesses may face if they operate without complying with the law. From financial penalties to potential criminal liability, the risks are far greater than many entrepreneurs realise. Whether you are planning to franchise your business, evaluating a franchise opportunity, or deciding between a licensing and franchising model, this conversation offers practical insights into due diligence, legal compliance, and protecting both franchisors and franchisees. #TheFinancialCoconut #FranchiseLaw #Franchising 🎧 *The Financial Coconut:* Your weekly source for empowering financial knowledge and unlocking possibilities. Most people want to get rich faster. But what if the smarter move, especially in your 20s and 30s, is not squeezing every dollar out of a tiny portfolio? For busy professionals, wealth accumulation may start with something less sexy but far more powerful: growing your income, managing your spending, and consistently investing the difference. Chris How (semi-retired, founder of retireby50.me), Chris Chong (45K-sub FIRE YouTuber, ex-accountant), and Chris Ng (engineer-turned-CFA) break down what has aged badly in the investing world, from crypto hype to thematic funds, blind loyalty to jobs, and even over-reliance on one strategy. They also discuss robo-advisors, brokers, CPF, RSPs, dynamic RSPs, and why every platform has its own incentive. Your “global” portfolio might not be as global as you think. Many investors buy a world index believing they are diversified across the planet. But if a large chunk of that exposure is still concentrated in the US, and especially in US tech, are you really spreading your risk? Reggie flew to Paris for the Amundi World Investment Forum and sat with Guy Stear, Head of Developed Markets Strategy, Amundi Investment Institute, to unpack what comes next. The hot take from one of Europe's largest asset managers: the next leg of AI won't be electrical engineering in Silicon Valley - it'll be the physical world. Drones cleaning skyscrapers. Robots in factories. Mechanical engineering. The countries good at this aren't the ones already trading at 90x sales. This conversation from the Amundi World Investment Forum in Paris pushes investors to rethink what diversification actually means today. For Singapore investors, the big question is simple: are you actively choosing your exposure, or are you just accepting the default? hear about the Nokia lesson, the US-China fragmentation reality, and how a Singapore investor should actually build three diversification blocks. Why are more Singaporeans investing overseas instead of at home? In this episode of Chills with TFC, Reggie sits down with Louis and Jameis to unpack what it would really take to make Singapore’s stock market more vibrant again. The conversation goes beyond returns. It looks at the deeper issues behind the SGX, from company fundamentals and corporate governance, to liquidity, retail participation, and whether stronger local capital support could help create a healthier market. Singapore has built itself into a trusted global financial centre. But when younger investors think about equities today, many look first to the United States, not Singapore. So the question is not just whether the local market can recover, but what must change for investors to believe in it again. Should Temasek play a bigger role? Should CPF investment frameworks include more Singapore exposure? Can better disclosure rebuild confidence? Would you move back to Singapore if your salary doubled? For some Singaporeans living in Paris, the answer is not as obvious as we think. Yes, France comes with higher taxes, strikes, smaller apartments, language barriers, and a very different pace of life. But the trade-off is also real: stronger healthcare coverage, more holidays, cheaper schooling, employee benefits, unemployment support, and a lifestyle where money is not always the only scoreboard. This conversation goes beyond the usual “Paris is romantic” fantasy. It looks at what life actually feels like when you compare salary, stress, family life, medical anxiety, work-life balance, and the cost of simply existing in two very different systems. Maybe the bigger question is not “Where can I earn more?” Maybe it is: “Where can I live better?” Would you trade a higher salary for a better quality of life? We spend a lot of time talking about wealth strategies, career moves, investing, business, and personal growth. But what if some outcomes are shaped not just by effort, but also by timing, environment, and the patterns we keep repeating? Dawn, SG BudgetBabe and Anthony sit down with Grandmaster David from Imperial Harvest to explore a different lens on success: Ba Zi, Imperial Feng Shui, luck cycles, AI, decision-making, and whether people can shift their outcomes when they feel stuck. We discuss why some people seem talented but still face repeated roadblocks, whether AI can replace traditional metaphysics readings, why “wealth stars” may be misunderstood, and how tools like Ba Zi and Qi Men are used by some people to think through career, business, and life decisions. Whether you are a believer, skeptic, or just curious, this conversation is less about blind belief - and more about asking: how much of success is hard work, how much is timing, and how much can we actually influence? Would you ever consult a feng shui master before making a major life or money decision? If this conversation made you think about your own patterns, timing, or “wealth ceiling,” you can explore Imperial Harvest’s work and resources here: https://imperialharvest.com/ --- 🎧 The Financial Coconut: Your weekly source for empowering financial knowledge and unlocking possibilities. Three Singaporean software engineers. One target: $30,000 monthly recurring revenue. One end goal: retire in Chiang Mai. Meet the Jobless Club — Sean, Joseph, and Jonas — a trio of full-time engineers spending their nights and weekends building side businesses that could free them from the corporate grind. Their bet against the lone-wolf indie hacker model? Three founders are more sustainable than one. They've already turned a knife sharpening side hustle into S$16K in revenue, killed off projects that didn't pay (a Be Real-style Telegram bot, an NUS matching tool), and built a quarterly framework that splits real work from real fun. Reggie sits down with two of the three to break down their playbook: how they pick projects, when they kill them, why they meet weekly, and what "jobless" actually means when you're working harder than ever. If you've ever fantasised about quitting your day job — this is what disciplined escape looks like. --- 🎧 The Financial Coconut: Your weekly source for empowering financial knowledge and unlocking possibilities. Singapore loves the story of social mobility. But behind the headlines, there's a quieter story: poverty is often an entrenched social class, and very few people actually climb out of it. Syainda Abdul was one of them. At 17 she was changing diapers. Married into an abusive relationship. Living in rental flats. Surviving on $900/month ComCare aid with $1,200 in expenses, and using $20 of that aid to buy a Canva subscription so she could cold-call companies and hustle freelance design gigs. Today? She works at a global bank. She's part of the middle class. And she's running another race. Reggie sits with Syainda to unpack what "exiting poverty" actually looks like, the elusive ladder of government support, the role of charities like Babes, lifestyle creep after the climb, lifelong financial blindspots from growing up poor, and the strange mix of delusion and practicality it takes to believe you can break out when nothing around you suggests it's possible. This is the real, unfiltered version of social mobility. Listen to the whole thing. #ExitingPoverty #SocialMobility #Singapore #SingleMum #TheFinancialCoconut --- 🎧 The Financial Coconut: Your weekly source for empowering financial knowledge and unlocking possibilities. Creators, freelancers, and micro-business owners often only think about contracts, IP rights, payment terms, and legal recourse after something goes wrong. But by then, it may already be messy. In this live TFC Business Show session, recorded live at Whiskdom Cafe, we unpack what creators need to know to protect their work and get paid properly. We discuss what happens when a stockist does not pay, why contracts matter, what creators should look out for before signing agreements, how IP ownership works, when trademark registration becomes important, and how AI may affect copyright protection. Because once your creative work starts making money, you are not “just doing passion” anymore. You are building a business. And businesses need protection, paperwork, and proper recourse when things go wrong. This conversation is for creators, freelancers, designers, performers, IP owners, and anyone building something from scratch. Two helpers. Two drivers. Two cars. That was middle class life back home for our guests in KL, Jakarta, and Hong Kong. So why on earth did they choose to leave it behind for a 4-room HDB and the MRT? Sit down with Shen, Music Programme Director, Mickey Salim, and Theros, Founder, Yinvest.co to unpack the viral IG post comparing middle class life across ASEAN. They get into the painful trade-offs: cheap drivers and lower living costs back home vs reliable healthcare, public transport, and shorter commutes here. They dig into the unspoken comparison Tetris with neighbours and church friends, the kids in tuition until 11pm, and what "middle class comfort" actually looks like in 2026 Singapore. If you've ever felt the grind and wondered if it's worth it, this one's for you. What do you do when the job market is trash and you’ve got a Masters degree but zero interest in a cubicle? You hitchhike to Thailand, obviously. Hear from Yihui and Jake, two 'crazy guys' who went viral for hitchhiking from Singapore all the way to Krabi. But this isn't just a travel vlog, it’s a deep dive into the 'Fun Employed' lifestyle. We’re talking about the reality of 'unemployment maxing,' the pressure of seeing your peers get married and buy BTOs while you’re volunteering on a potato farm, and whether 'brand name' internships actually matter when the world is falling apart. Unpack: How do you actually hitchhike across borders in 2024? Is taking a year off a brilliant move or a career suicide? Dealing with the 'FOMO' of seeing friends move on with 'adult' life. The Scholarship loophole Why one of them is finally looking for a job while the other is still chasing the next adventure. If you’ve ever felt like quitting your job to go see the world, this is the reality check (and the inspiration) you need. --- 🎧 The Financial Coconut: Your weekly source for empowering financial knowledge and unlocking possibilities. Why is it that in one of the wealthiest nations on earth, we still feel like we’re never quite 'safe'? Sit down with a true legend in the Singapore literary and academic scene. Eight years ago, she changed the national conversation with her bestseller This Is What Inequality Looks Like. Now, she’s back with a new project that might be even more uncomfortable…because this time, it’s about you. Introducing our guest: Teo You Yenn A sociologist, Associate Professor at NTU, and Director of the Centre for the Study of Social Inequality. You Yenn has a unique gift for taking heavy academic research and turning it into stories that resonate with every Singaporean, from the low-income to the high-flying professional. In this episode, we explore: Why her old book shot back to the top of the charts the moment her new one was announced. Beyond Poverty: Why her latest research shifted from studying "them" (the low-income) to studying "us" (the middle and upper class). The Concept of "Unease": We’ve all felt that nagging anxiety about our finances and our future, even when the numbers say we’re "fine." You Yenn explains the systemic reason why this feeling is collective, not just personal. Why she chooses to "chase the thing down" and bring academic research out of the ivory tower and into the public square. The Shared Struggle: How inequality isn't just a problem for a small group, it’s a system we are all entangled in, and it’s affecting our mental health more than we realise. "I thought I was an outsider looking in... until I read this. Then I realised, I’m right in the middle of it." Tune in to find out why you feel the way you do about your life in Singapore. --- 🎧 The Financial Coconut: Your weekly source for empowering financial knowledge and unlocking possibilities. She's 26, single, and just bought a near $1 million condo on a freelance income. The internet refused to believe it. Meet Chris Chross, Producer & Sound Recordist, Continuum Creatives - the Singaporean millennial whose TikTok went viral when she filmed her parents' reaction to her solo condo purchase. But the headline misses the actual story. Behind the viral moment is a brutal practical playbook: why she went condo over HDB (singles can't BTO), how she saved and earned $20K in 10 weeks for the down payment, the mortgage haircut every non-9-to-5 worker needs to know about, and why she still doesn't feel rich. Reggie sits her down to unpack the strategy, the sacrifices, and the parts the algorithm doesn't show - from bank loan SOPs to family dynamics to what she'd actually do differently. What does retirement actually look like when you've done it right? In this episode, we sit down with Nicole and Edward, a Singaporean couple in their early fifties who've been fully retired for four years. They didn't inherit wealth. They didn't go all in on crypto. They built their exit the slow, boring, brilliant way, and now they travel 120 days a year, ski across Japan, and still have the financial runway to prove it works. But here's what makes this conversation different: they're not selling you a formula. Nicole spent decades in banking, watched every major financial crisis unfold, and used that fear to build something bulletproof. Ed? He wrote poems about his job, and then one day decided it wasn't worth it anymore. We dig into: How they set their retirement target in the 1990s with zero internet and no Google - and why the number they picked still holds up today Their 50/35/15 portfolio split - and why they don't think you need to be a stock-picker to win The "UAT" approach to retirement - how they tested living abroad in Bangkok and Japan before committing to the lifestyle Why they don't believe in retiring too early - and the age bracket they think is the sweet spot Post-retirement identity, purpose, and what actually keeps you fulfilled when the title and the payslip are gone This isn't a story about being lucky or childless or rich. It's about making decisions consistently over 20 years, and what that actually buys you. --- 🎧 The Financial Coconut: Your weekly source for empowering financial knowledge and unlocking possibilities. Markets are volatile. Headlines are everywhere. Oil prices are rising, geopolitics is heating up, and investors everywhere are trying to predict what happens next. But what if trying to predict the market is the biggest mistake investors make? How should you actually invest in a world that feels unpredictable? Sit with Wei Dai, Global Head of Research, Dimensional Fund Advisors, to break down the science behind investing and why long-term strategies often beat trying to outguess the market. Wei Dai leads a global research team studying how markets behave and how academic insights translate into real investment portfolios. In this conversation, she explains why disciplined, research-driven investing may matter more than reacting to headlines. We discuss: Why market prices already contain more information than most investors realise The difference between active investing, passive investing, and systematic investing The real drivers of long-term stock returns: size, value, and profitability How professionals avoid value traps and falling knives Whether geopolitics and oil prices should affect your portfolio The truth about global diversification (and why many investors aren’t truly diversified) Why predicting markets is far harder than people think Whether you're a beginner investor or someone building a long-term portfolio, this conversation offers a deeper look into how markets work and how disciplined investors navigate uncertainty. --- 🎧 The Financial Coconut: Your weekly source for empowering financial knowledge and unlocking possibilities.
